Origin Story

How Flutter Initiative started

The Flutter team came together through our work at Maya Health, with the mission of harnessing the power of real world evidence to inform best practices and sensible policies, so that more people can access safe psychedelic practices for healing and expansion.

"One of Maya’s major contributions is to make it more of the norm for practitioners to collect data, so they are able to demonstrate the value of psychedelic therapy."
— Robin Carhart-Harris
Director of Psychedelics Division, Neuroscape, UCSF

Our project began as a collaborative venture

...alongside luminaries such as Dr. Robin Carhart Harris and Hannes Kettner of UCSF, and Justin Townsend of MycoMediations. Together, we embarked on a study to gauge the therapeutic alliance between participants and facilitators, aiming to decipher its impacts on the long-term effects of a psychedelic experience.

Simultaneously, the Maya team expanded the platform with nearly 150 validated measures and scales and embarked on the seminal task of cataloging and contextualizing an array of validated measures and questionnaires. This involved rigorous research into each scale's validation process, scoring methodology, and effectiveness. It was a meticulous endeavor that underscored our commitment to detail.

This project demonstrates the fusion of expertise and genuine curiosity, embodying our commitment to illuminating the path for the psychedelic movement. Our work is a testament to our dedication to providing practical tools that empower those seeking to integrate validated measures into their practices.

Maya is a Colorado Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), which means our team members, advisors, and investors prioritize purpose over profit.

The Team

Jaz Cadoch

Jessica 'Jaz' Cadoch, a cultural and medical anthropologist, has been delving into the intricate aspects of the psychedelic movement since 2016. Her expertise lies in the integration of psychedelics into the modern Western world. In 2020, she served as the research manager at Maya Health. In 2022, she played a vital role on the steering committee for Colorado's Natural Medicine Health Act, serving as a bridge between grassroots efforts and policymakers.

Jaz remains actively engaged in the psychedelic community as the co-steward of the Global Psychedelic Society. She is also the co-founder of ALKEMI, a consulting firm dedicated to promoting responsible psychedelic use and integration within society, with a strong emphasis on equitable access and indigenous benefit sharing. Additionally, she holds the role of Community & Public Engagement Manager at the Psychedelic Health Equity Initiative, an organization committed to mapping health equity and access for minority populations in the psychedelic ecosystem.
As a distinguished medical anthropologist specializing in the harmonious integration of psychedelics into contemporary Western practices, Jaz embarked on an immersive journey into validated measures and questionnaires that help us understand the efficacy of a psychedelic practice.

David Champion

David is the CEO and Founder of Maya and a Director at Unlimited Sciences. Previously, David was Co-founder & CPO at Baker Technologies, which he exited after achieving a valuation of $250MM.

Before graduating summa cum laude in Architecture from Cambridge University, David built a nonprofit organization to help Kenyan children access schooling by funding the cost of books, uniforms, and classroom construction.

He has a decade of experience designing consumer software and his interests are behavioral data, digital art, user experience design, oil painting, and mindfulness. Having experienced a temporary but extreme glimpse of what it might be like to have a psychotic break, David became committed to helping people enduring those symptoms every day.
As an experienced 5-time entrepreneur, designer, researcher, technologist, and philanthropist, David has played a roll in sculpting a more objective and data science-oriented approach to psychedelic research over the course of four years working professionally in this space. His research with Johns Hopkins University, through the nonprofit he founded in 2019, Unlimited Sciences, begin his journey of inquiry into optimizing the measurement best practices for these complex modalities, culminating in the development of his most recent startup tech company, Maya Health.
About Us

We’re a team dedicated to helping the psychedelic movement thrive through standardized best practices designed to serve each individual, in every circumstance.

Serving the Entire Community

Flutter is designed for all psychedelic practitioners, retreat facilitators, and clinicians

At the heart of our mission lies a commitment to cultivate trust, reliability, scalability, security, and usability within the intricate tapestry of global psychedelic services.

Our Equal Opportunity Policy stands as a resolute commitment to dismantling barriers and advancing genuine inclusivity and diversity in the landscape of psychedelic therapy. We recognize the unique challenges faced by practitioners who may lack the conventional privileges of medical education or familiarity with these forms.

Through our reduced-fee programs and scholarships, we strive to address this imbalance, empowering practitioners dedicated to championing equitable access for marginalized populations. This initiative not only levels the playing field but also elevates the potential of every facilitator, irrespective of their background, to seamlessly harness validated measures and questionnaires.

Notably, it allows us to present insights derived from practices devoted to equitable access, providing tangible proof of transformative impact. In doing so, we not only bridge gaps but craft a rich and inclusive narrative, ensuring that the transformative power of these resources is embedded into the fabric of every community we touch.

Research Background

Resources developed from years of research

The Flutter Initiative brings to life years of rigorous research and collaboration between our team and the many practitioners and researchers working in this field. We are proud to bring you the fruits of this labor in a format that is designed to meet these current needs in the community —

Affordability
Efficacy
Simplicity
"Clinicians of psychedelic medicine stand to benefit from well-validated tools to measure the experiences of participants. Accurate measurements might correlate with outcomes and could inform clinical decisions about additional medication sessions, changes to different agents, or considerations of alternative approaches… Indeed, recent publications have reported a correlation between higher scores on measures of “mystical experiences” and outcomes in MDD and TUD"
— Davis et al.  2020; Garcia-Romeu, Griffiths, and Johnson 2014
